History

History!

SINCE HIS LAST APPEARANCE:

After he led the Inquisition to Skyhold, Solas disappeared. With the Herald dead, there was little he thought the Inquisition could do, to recover the orb, and decided that he was better off on his own. (Before they started questioning him any more deeply.) Still weak, he could do little more than sneak around the country side, studying the veil and trying to make contacts among the elves - mostly in cities, since the Dalish were hesitant to speak to him. For a time, he began to despair that he would ever have the power to face Corypheus, without the anchor, and then -

And then he heard about the shards.

((OPTIONAL: PLOT? He started collecting the shard bearers that he came across, and is taking them back to Skyhold.))

Personality

Solas has two forms - the first is the form he shows to everyone, which is an intelligent, odd dreamer, who would rather spend his time studying the Fade, or in dreams themselves, than dealing with real people. Polite, but distant, and incredibly smart but with old prejudices that come out clear as crystal when faced with them. Against Tevinter, for example. Against the stubbornness of the Dalish. His politeness is the first form of defence against a world that is unlikely to be polite to him. After any semblance of trust, out will come the wry humour, and the biting criticism if he finds it warranted.

Beneath that, however, Solas is an ancient and complicated man. He has forsworn his own happiness in order to fix the mistake he made thousands of years ago. He can be brought to care deeply about people but does not want to - he knows that any real, firm attachments will only make things more difficult for himself, in the end. He is deeply sorrowful, but also deeply angry - he cannot stand to see injustice, especially that which would rob anyone of their freedom. He has an absolute singular will, and will not be dissuaded from his task, whatever the cost to himself. Whatever the cost to the rest of Thedas.

The traits that both his 'forms' share, however, are a thirst for knowledge, to retain the past, to revel in history and to correct it when required. He can happily lose himself in recalling stories of the Fade, of spirits that he has known, of ancient voices now lost. Even if he has to pretend that he was not a living witness to them, himself. Even those that he might otherwise claim to despise, he can find himself engaged in conversation with. About the intricacies of nullification magic used in tandem with offensive magic, for example.

But if people sass him, he'll give as good as he gets.

Opinions & Affiliations

Solas’ opinions can be briefly be summed up as ‘self determination above all’. He believes in every individual’s right to make their own choices, and find their own path (though he’s more likely to believe in it for an Elf, aka ‘real’ people, but never mind). So the Qun, for example, is absolutely horrific to him. Tevinter embraces the same slavery that led him to rebel in the first place. The Chantry is simply wrong, and has led to far too many other problems, like the Mage/Templar War. He believes Mages should be free (surprise), and indeed has a pretty open view even about blood magic. The Grey Wardens are a terrible answer to a terrible problem, and have managed to buy time, and little else, with too much cost.

Generally speaking Elves > everyone else, Freedom > Slavery/Servitude.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Solas in his current state is still an incredibly powerful mage, with the ability to dream-walk, and knows far more about the Veil and the Fade than likely anyone else alive. He is not meant for hand-to-hand combat and please don’t give him a sword.

He also really shouldn’t be used as a politician, as he’ll probably say something that offends someone, because being told that everything you’re doing is wrong tends to do that to people.

Inventory

Staff
Apostate Hobo Outfit
Apostate Hobo Supplies (food, probably a tin can of some kind, tea)
A stylish fur thing

Motivation

Solas is returning to the Inquisition to uncover the truth about the shards, and see if they can indeed be used together to defeat Corypheus, or - even better - if, since the anchor isn’t in it’s full form, they can somehow be brought together to repair the anchor.
